Work that began in 2016 to create a state of the art new multi layer junction at the Wallsend section of the Coast Road is approaching it’s final phase.
The construction will allow better access to both the Wallsend Silverlink retail park and those heading North & South A19 leading to and from the Tyne Tunnel crossing in East Howdon.
The reported £75 million pound scheme in Wallsend, North Tyneside, is being carried out by Highways England, who say the new triple-decker junction will improve traffic flow on what is one of the busiest routes in the region.
The planners stated aim is to improve road safety and relieve the heavy congestion caused by over 69,000 vehicles passing through the junction each day.
New speed restriction are still being enforced by traffic officers which will mean that for the foreseeable future, the A19 and 1058 Coast Rd running from Wallsend up through to North Shields will still have speeds restricted to only 30mph for the duration of the work.
The roadway scheme is still anticipated to be completed next year (2019).
