The Queen Officially Opens The Tyne Tunnel 2 In East Howdon Wallsend

Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, visited East Howdon today to officially open the second Tyne Tunnel on Tyneside 45 years after opening the first Tyne Tunnel in 1967.

Traffic on the tunnel section of the A19 in Wallsend North Tyneside came to a standstill for a short period of time while Her Majesty met Tyne Tunnel staff before giving a speech and unveiling a plaque to mark the official opening of the Tyne Tunnel Project.

Although both tunnels have been open for a few months, this official opening ceremony completes the project and give well wishers an eagerly awaited opportunity to see the Queen & The Duke Of Edinburgh who were visible to the Wallsend public for only a short time as they continued on their tour of the North East as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
