New ASDA Supermarket Opens In Wallsend

Supermarket giant Asda is to open a new store in Wallsend Town centre following it purchase of all the UK stores of Danish discount retailer Netto for a reported £778m.

The current Netto store on the junction of Hadrian Road & Station Road in Wallsend will become an ASDA store with easy access to the Metro station, the Wallsend bus station & car parking facilities.

The news that Asda is to open a new store in Wallsend is sure to have repercussions for the proposed Morrison’s superstore in Wallsend Forum which has been  the subject of a save our shops campaign and is sure to create some discussion among the Forum’s new owners.

Update: The new Asda Supermarket opened it’s doors at 10am on Wednesday October the 12th.

Why close Netto? Ok, it’ll be nice to have a supermarket with more choice on the shelves but wasn’t that what Morrisons was supposed to be providing? Except they’ve shown what they think of their potential customers in Wallsend and that’s obviously very little. I’m bothered about how will this affect my food budget in this so called ‘age of austerity’? I’m not a snob and unlike some people I’m not ashamed to be seen carrying a Netto bag if it means I’ve saved a few quid as a result. If Netto is being replaced will those like myself who regularly shop there find their weekly shopping bills rise as a result. It may seem petty but if we really are ‘all in this together’ does that mean people like Nick Clegg or David Cameron worry about their bills? Which is why I think that the people of Wallsend, a place that probably harbours some of the lowest paid people in the country, need to be supported with more choice, including shops like Netto, not replace them.

Thank God, at last a decent supermarket in Wallsend. Wallsend shopping area has been slowly dying….nearly all the ‘decent’ shops have either closed or moved….even Charity shops have been closing!!
    Save our shops!
Morrisons did the dirty by not opening the old Co-op as a supermarket despite all their empty promises.
Yes there are supermarkets…but they are all miles away from Wallsend town centre, and not one is served by a reasonable bus service.

Not another American owned “lowest common denominator”ASDA! There is already one on the Old Coast Road – why do we need another? We will just have to hope that one of the British supermarkets opens in the Forum to provide choice.
I expect it will be very popular though as the town is starved of a mass appeal supermarket.

  1. The Netto should become the Asda Store by the beginning of the summer, but we will update visitors when we find out the detailed dates.
